DEATH VALLEY GIRLS
Founded in 2014 by multi-instrumentalist singer Bonnie Bloomgarden and guitarist Larry Schemel, Death Valley Girls have been making a name for themselves ever since with their proto-punk music, which they call "California Doom Boogie". Two years after Darkness Rains, the singer and her accomplices embark on a new garage rock journey with a space gospel flavour on the album Under the Spell of Joy.
Under the Spell of Joy marked a significant turning point for the Death Valley Girls: with its emphasis on melodies, vocals and velvety, sometimes even soaring, atmospheres, the Californians confirmed everything that was good about them (including their great fan, Iggy Pop!), and made their garage rock more complex without betraying any of their principles.
But on her latest opus, 'Islands in the Sky', frontwoman Bonnie Bloomgarden uses the band's hymns as a guide to spiritual healing and a roadmap for future incarnations of the self. The resulting music is by far Death Valley Girls' most infectious and festive to date. The new album will be released on 24 February 2023, but in the meantime the band have released a video clip of their first single from the LP, 'What Are The Odds'.
PYTHIES
If the oracles of Delphi don't speak to you, maybe three chicks shouting their contempt for the patriarchy will. If it's neither, you'll still enjoy the banging. Driven by dissonant, grungy melodies, Pythies draw on all the feminist and esoteric underground culture you've been fantasising about.
Pythies is a witchy grunge trio from Paris founded by Lise.L (ex-Romance). At the end of 2022, she decided to start work on a new, all-female project that would combine her taste for 90s grunge (L7, 7 Year Bitch, Babes in Toyland) with the feminist esoterica she uses on a daily basis.
In January 2023, she met drummer Anna B. Void ( ex- Toxxic Queen, ex- Slut'n Slug) and guitarist Thérèse La Garce via the networks, but the latter was replaced in June 2024 by Alice Adjutor ( ex- She Wolf).
These three strong personalities then formed a formidable new trio: on drums, Anna brings a touch of madness behind the drums, as well as a wild energy that's completely grunge; Alice embraces the esoteric and punk energy of the project; finally Lise, who composes and writes all the tracks, easily combines sensuality with melodies.
