When her lover went off to war, the daughter of the potter Dibutade traced the outline of his shadow in charcoal, giving birth to drawing. Shadows were taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the 19th century. It came to haunt the Romantics, was coloured by the Impressionists and became a work in its own right in the shadow theatres of the end of the century. Shapes, contrasts, volumes: contemporary works presented in the exhibition will explore the photographic writing of the shadow.
