"As you walk along the banks of rivers, lakes, ponds and freshwater marshes, you come across coots. On open water or water lilies, they peck at surface vegetation and dive to find it at depth.
They resemble moorhens, except that the coot's beak is white, topped by an equally white forehead patch, while the moorhen's beak is bright red with a yellow tip.
But sometimes, for no great reason, the coot chases another coot. And the scene is bound to catch the eye. Wings outstretched and agitated, but not taking flight, the two birds run at full speed across the surface, their legs splashing the water and leaving behind them a very fleeting arabesque in suspension."
