Matthias HAVINGA, organist and pianist, studied both instruments at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he now teaches organ. Winner of various international organ competitions, he enjoys an international career, performing in the great concert halls and on the great organs of Europe, the United States, South America and Russia, as soloist or with groups such as the Nederlands Kamerkoor and the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest. He is also regularly invited to give master classes.
His repertoire covers the majority of organ music, from medieval to contemporary, and his CDs, published by Brilliant Classics, have received international critical acclaim. His videos on his YouTube channel and on the channel of the Netherlands Bach Society are very popular.
Matthias Havinga is titular organist of the great organs of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. This instrument, built in 1726, is one of the most famous in the Netherlands, and its huge organ case is a masterpiece in itself. The Oude Kerk already had an organ in the 15th century. The organist, harpsichordist, composer and great teacher Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was its organist from 1577 to 1621.
