JOURNEES EUROPEENNES DU PATRIMOINE

Address :
85300 SALLERTAINE
FRANCE

Presentation of: JOURNEES EUROPEENNES DU PATRIMOINE

Take a free tour of the Romanesque church in Sallertaine, the oldest of the village's two churches. The first mention of the building dates back to 1080. Dedicated to Saint Martin, the church then belonged to the adjacent Benedictine priory, placed under the authority of the abbey of Marmoutiers (near Tours) founded
by Saint Martin himself.
Take a self-guided tour of the Jardin de Vaulieu, the town's floral gem, which used to be a sandstone limestone quarry. It was exploited from ancient times until the 1950s. The Town Hall acquired it in 2003 and restored it.
The Vaulieu garden is another historic site.
It provides an insight into the geological evolution of Sallertaine through the ages. Sallertaine was built on a limestone island. It was once surrounded by salt marshes.
