Coal in the Vendée and Deux-Sèvres... Unlikely!
Yet an entire region, from Saint-Maurice-des-Noues to Saint-Laurs, lived from coal mining from 1827 to 1958! Headframes, shafts and corons shaped the landscape. Men from near and far have brought life to the working-class town of Faymoreau and the surrounding area.

The exhibition La mine info ou intox invites you to discover the incredible history of the Faymoreau mines, by deciphering the true from the false! The mining past is full of subjects that need to be clarified and of preconceived ideas: blind horses, cool temperatures in the mines, massive influx of foreigners, women and children working underground, early retirement, miners left to die when the mines closed and the disappearance of the slag heaps!
