800 YEARS OF HISTORY
Ardelay castle dates back to the 12th century, when an artificial mound surrounded by a moat and a circular stone wall was built. With its imposing 15th-century keep, it is one of the region's finest examples of defensive and military architecture.
Restored in the 20th century by the town of Les Herbiers, the castle was owned by several illustrious families, including the De Vivonne and Les Herbiers families, from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
ART AT THE HEART OF OUR HERITAGE
Château d'Ardelay hosts temporary exhibitions of the visual arts several times a year. Sculpture, photography, painting... artists are invited to exhibit their work in an authentic setting steeped in history.
A place of life and creative expression, the château also hosts the annual Salon des Artistes, bringing together around thirty artists from all over France.
In addition to the temporary visual arts exhibitions, a scientific exhibition on the site's heritage and history is held once a year. Certain areas, such as the dungeon, are open for visits or events.
