Presentation of: Aqueduc de Maille

The construction of an aqueduct bridge (also known as a canal bridge) is a major technical feat.
It allows two rivers to cross over each other, isolated by an immersed tunnel.

This structure was built between 1654 and 1662, when work to drain the Vix marsh was completed.
It forms part of a vast hydraulic network comprising the Canal de Vix, the canalised river Jeune Autise and the Contrebot de Vix.

At this point, the Jeune Autise evacuates the water from the wet marsh, passing through the heart of the structure; the Canal de Vix, for its part, receives the water from the dry marsh, passing through an immersed tunnel.
In this way, the mass of hydraulic energy and the volume of water are skilfully controlled.

Discover it on walking trail 6, available from the Sud Vendée Marais Poitevin tourist office,
or take part in a cycle tour called "Le Marais Poitevin à bicyclette".
