Presentation of: LE LAVOIR DES ESSARTS

The 19th century saw the construction of the modern château and the château's caretaker's lodge, known as the "Chalet" by the people of Essart. Next to this building, Baron de Lespinay had a basin dug and paved with granite stone. This basin was used to wash the horses, which went in to be cleaned after their day's work. A little later, the commune, whose mayor was Armand de Rougé, added a reservoir and a wash-house to the basin. In the 19th and 20th centuries, this washhouse was a favourite meeting place for the local women. They were known as "les lavandières". The local council decided to restore it in the early 1990s.
