On 27 March 1944, the American B 17 bomber "Big Red", on fire, flew over Aizenay. It crashed on the edge of the forest. Trapped in the flames, in a plane in distress, the crew tried to get out of the bomber. Some jumped by parachute, others into the void, with nothing. The Germans combed the farms and bushes... Some airmen were taken prisoner, others were taken in by resistance networks...
Fifty years later, in December 1994, the book "Il s'appelait Big Red" was published in bookshops. On 1 July 1995, the "Path of Remembrance" was inaugurated on the very spot where the bomber fell.
