A powerful fortress, a Romanesque abbey and then a Gothic cathedral, Maillezais has shone for centuries in religious, economic and artistic terms.
Overlooking the canals dug by the monks to drain the Gulf of the Pictons, Maillezais stands on an island overlooking the Marais Poitevin, a splendid natural environment that is unique in France.
There's plenty to see and do all year round!

François Rabelais, guest of Maillezais Abbey, drew his inspiration from the abbey to set the scene for Gargantua and Pantagruel, alongside Mélusine and Geoffroy de Lusignan.
The marsh sailor
Discover the history of the Poitevin marshes from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Identify the function of the different areas: wet marsh, dry marsh and the Bay of Aiguillon. An immersive and entertaining show.
