The abbey was founded in 682 AD on a limestone islet. Following the Concordat of 1516, it became a royal abbey.

It was established on the site of a Benedictine priory. The building was only a barn in 1124, but the church was built in 1357.
The church was consecrated on 24 September 1902, replacing the former church.
