The abbey was founded in 682 AD on a limestone islet. Following the Concordat of 1516, it became a royal abbey.

The church is modest in size, following a longitudinal plan with a nave ending in a flat chevet.
The Trinity Church, nowadays Cathedral, has been built not far from the castle, in 1070, by monks coming from 'La Couture' in Le M
Small in size, the first stones were laid in the 12th century.
The church was destroyed during the French Revolution. It was rebuilt in the 19th century.
