The abbey was founded in 682 AD on a limestone islet. Following the Concordat of 1516, it became a royal abbey.

This modest church of the mid eighteenth was enlarged after the damage caused by the Vendée wars.
It was established on the site of a Benedictine priory. The building was only a barn in 1124, but the church was built in 1357.
